It’s an election that nobody wants.
But it is an election that everyone is going get, if Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff has his way.
There is one reason and only one reason for Iggy to call an election.
He can’t wait to sit in the prime minister’s chair.
All he can offer Canadians at this stage is “time is up” for Prime Minister Stephen Harper.
To back up his threats, the Liberals have mounted a $2 million TV campaign to showcase their beloved leader.
Talk about fiscal prudence at a time of economic uncertainty.
The ads aim to show Canadians that Iggy is a world-class guy with a world-class mind, caring and compassionate.
Ignatieff’s world class mind has not amounted to much so far other than him borrowing liberally from speeches of U.S. president Barack Obama.
As for caring and compassion, he does not give two hoots about what you think or if you have an appetite for a fourth federal election in five years, each of which costs the taxpayers in excess of C$300 million.
A new survey this week tells us that Ignatieff has not made a case for an election.
This is evident in a poll conducted by Strategic Counsel for CTV and The Globe and Mail which shows the Liberals trailing the Conservatives by five percentage points. The Liberal slide is even worse in Quebec.
Ignatieff is an unknown in Western Canada and has made little or no impact here other than garnering some headlines when he threatens to topple Stephen Harper.
He would be well advised to take heed that Canadians, especially those on this side of the Rockies, send MPs to Ottawa to lead not to bicker, manipulate and maneuver so they can get better offices on Parliament Hill.
Harper, may be dictatorial and has a penchant for leadership without committee.
But at least he leads.
Ignatieff on the other hand wants to lead but so far his Canadian resume is unimpressive and littered with idle threats.
His basic plan seems to revolve around getting rid of Harper so he can do the same thing that he says Harper should not do.
“Wherever I’ve worked, I’ve met Canadians who were the best the world has to offer,” Ignatieff says. “We need a new way of thinking; a government that thinks big, that has a global perspective, invests in Canadians, gets their ideas to market, reaching out to India and China to build the economy of tomorrow. I know Canadians can take on the world and win.”
Isn’t that what Harper’s Tory machinery is doing despite the constant threats of being upstaged by the Iggy Liberals?
Canada under Harper is riding this rough recession fairly well and there are signs that we are on the road to recovery.
An election at this time is unwanted, unwarranted and will undermine Canada’s recovery.
So stop being so selfish Iggy, stop acting small and help Canada recover.
Then we will listen to your big plans to take on the world and win.
