A small town girl meets a pardesi boy and falls in love with him. That is the story of Mrs. Surinder Kaur. She fondly describes her first “arranged” meeting with her husband at her house when he came to see her with his parents and says she knew at that moment that he was “the one”. She travelled alone for the first time across oceans to come to Canada in 1999. Her family in Canada helped and supported her as she struggled with homesickness. But after visiting India a few times and becoming inspired by her friend’s boutique, she decided to open her own business. Being good at sewing and embroidering, she started designing Indian outfits and advertising them locally. She believes her family’s support has helped her grow professionally. In her spare time she likes to watch Indian movies and cook for her family. “I used to miss India a lot initially, but, now Canada is my home because my kids are here,” says Mrs. Kaur.
