Independent and strong are the words that Daljeet Kaur uses to describe herself. She learned these traits at a very young age after losing both her parents in the 1984 riots. Kaur struggled being raised by relatives, and realized that she would need a profession to count on. She started learning various kinds of embroidery from a local tailor in her village. Fortune came calling, when she moved to Canada in 1993 after getting married, as her skill came in handy to earn extra money. Now she works part-time at a nursery and does embroidery for various tailors. In her spare time, which she has little of, she likes to watch Hindi soap operas and cook. “I am very blessed to be living in Canada with my family,” she said with a smile.
