When it comes to changing career paths, it isn’t always obvious in which direction to turn.
There are, naturally, many anxieties about the future, especially when you are a mature student with other life responsibilities.
Deidre Heim has these concerns when she returned to school. Heim graduated high school in 1982, 30 years earlier, and wanted to upgrade her skills in order to compete with her younger peers.
“A lot has changed since I graduated from high school. I needed to compete in an environment where people ten years younger have the advantage. So I went back to school to contemporize my skill-set,” She explained.
Deidre was also disillusioned with her current career in finance and wanted to rejuvenate her work life with a career that better suited her passion.
At Sprott-Shaw College, the advisors took considerable time to understand Deidre’s education needs and the direction she wanted to proceed.
“I felt very at home at Sprott Shaw College. The small class sizes made the learning process very personalized.”
“It is not as intimidating as being in a class with hundreds and it is definitely more hands on as well,” she stated.
Today Deidre is working in a new field of Tourism Hospitality Management.
“Age is no barrier with Sprott Shaw College. You are never too old to learn, afterall knowledge is power.”
With thirteen campuses across BC and the Lower Mainland, and with numerous career courses, Sprott Shaw offers much flexibility for students, whether just out of high school or mature and with families.
