Deputy Editor of The Province and Editor of Vancouver Desi Fabian Dawson was awarded the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal this past week.
He was credited for his dedication to the craft of journalism and how his work has inspired changes in Canada’s South Asian community.
Dawson was quoted as saying on the Vancouver Desi website that this "is a great honour for me, my family and my colleagues.”
The seasoned journalist has previously been recongnised for excellence in journalism in the U.S., England and Asia.
The special award celebrates Queen Elizabeth’s ascension to the throne 60 years ago and is presented to outstanding Canadians “who have made a significant contribution to Canada or to their province and community.”
Dawson has worked as a journalist for 30 years and his list of accomplishments is his dexterity of penmanship is broad.
In the recent past, the Malaysian born journalist produced a special series on India's social plague of 'honour killings' and also for a series on Punjab's Abandoned Brides.
This latter series investigated the plight of women left behind in India by their foreign husbands.
Dawson was also recognized for helping organize the We Salute our Heroes musical-video tribute and website to honour Canada’s fallen soldiers.His journalistic work has led to four documentary films and a made-for-TV movie.
He is also the lead author of the newly released book, Justice for Jassi, which delves into the honour killing of a B.C. woman in India.
Last year Dawson led a Province team to launch Vancouver Desi, which has a growing base of local and international content and commentary from the South Asian community.
Dawson and his wife, Anne migrated to Vancouver in 1988. They have two children.

OMNI news manager earns recognition
Bhupinder Hundal, the news manager at OMNI BC, was recently awarded the Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee Medal.
This is but the latest accolade for Hundal and his work at the multicultural TV channel.
In 2011 and 2012, Hundal's news team at OMNI was awarded the Jack Webster Award for Best Reporting in Chinese in 2011 and 2012.
He has also been awarded with a Rogers Business Impact award.
Since joining OMNI in 2004, Hundal has worked as an assignment editor, producer, reporter and commentator.
Over the years, he has been the leader in developing and executing OMNI BC’s special coverage.
Hundal planned and coordinated OMNI’s Election coverage as well as coverage of the 2010 and 2012 Olympic Games. He also served as the play-by-play voice of OMNI’s coverage of the Canadian Men's and Women's Olympic Hockey teams during the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games.
While primarily working behind the scenes, he has also appeared on-air during OMNI News providing coverage and insight on a number of issues ranging from politics, crime and sports.
Hundal is a member of the Radio Television Digital News Association and the BCIT Broadcast Advisory Council.
