Being passionate about the arts, Celine Chen has longed to see a competition for youth in the Lower Mainland.
But after finding a shortage of contests for youth, she decided to do something about it herself.
The Grade 11 student attending Mulgrave School in West Vancouver has launched the Greater Vancouver Art Contest for youth.
"Art is easily one of the most overlooked and undervalued subjects in school and society as many people cannot appreciate its beauty," said Chen.
"I strongly believe that one of the most critical components to become a successful artist is to be exposed to other artists’ work for inspiration."
The contest is open to any student in Greater Vancouver who is grades 8 to 12. There are two categories, junior and senior.
All submissions must be 2-dimensional and submitted as a high-res jpeg file. There is a limit of one entry per person.
Pieces will be judged on aesthetic, representation of theme and creativity.
The 10 best pieces per category will be displayed in the showcase, and awards will be given for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place contestants.
Spectators will be able to vote for their favourite piece during the showcase online.
Entry deadline is March 15, 2013 and the showcase will be held during Youth Week on May 1 - 7.
To submit a piece or enquire about participating, email Celine at gvancouverartcontest@gmail.com or go the contest website: gvancouverartcontest.tumblr.com.
