Repetitio Nigrum Et Album, Jacob Kimmie’s AW1314 collection debuts at Vancouver Fashion Week this week.
The collection is described by Kimmie as, “when a primal provocative sophistication becomes a basic necessity and influences what forward-looking, searching design ultimately looks like.”
Repetitio Nigrum Et Album is an experimental collection deconstructed to a conceptualist's minimalist attack on hi-concept fashion.
Pieces are composed in stripped back shapes, repetitive and re-interpreted in long and short lengths. It emphasises Jacob Kimmie’s obsession for a stark modernity interpreted in black and white.
“This idea to strip back frivolity and queasy sexiness - strip back the unnecessary ostentatious-ness - is like a narcotic for me”, says Kimmie.
Kimmie’s T-shirt blouses are crafted in wool crepe, jacket-tops are crafted in monk’s wool crepe with cutaway capes.
Trousers are meticulously cut, masculine lines interpreted for the female form, while cutaway versions focus solely to defy expectation.
Shapes are dart-less, basic, deconstructed, reinterpreted to present a new cool.
Cape-style dresses trail in transparency, worn with cutaway trousers to create a new sophistication.
“I wanted to keep the shapes basic and the contrasts in textures purist, but interpreted in an artisanal way. The print is created in this way by my
collaborative partner, Balal Naseer, who obsesses about the primary provocation of basic-ness.”
