Should you be worried about diabetes? The prevalence of type II diabetes in the Punjabi- and Chinese-speaking communities is on the rise in the province of BC. Yet there is a lack of culturally appropriate materials available for these community groups.
The eHealth Strategy Office at the University of British Columbia is piloting an online diabetes prevention program to support Punjabi- and Chinese-speaking individuals who do not have type II diabetes, residing in the province with specific emphasis on the rural areas.
The online format will allow individuals across BC to connect with each other, which is important since Asians and South Asians at higher-risk for diabetes.
The Peer-to-Peer program is a free, 12-week online program that will be facilitated through Facebook by a South Asian or Chinese peer. Dr. Kendall Ho, Director of the eHealth Strategy Office, and his team have created culturally appropriate educational materials and resources to provide those at-risk for diabetes with the necessary tools and support they need for prevention.
The project/program is looking for participants.
