The 3300 British Columbia Regiment of the Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps recently held its first annual ceremonial review on June 20th in Surrey.
The honourable Jinny Sims, MP for Newton-North Delta was the reviewing officer while the commanding officer was Major Jim Blomme. The chair sponsor and chairperson of the Friends of the Sikh Cadets Society, Harbinder Singh Sewak, was also part of the review team.
“We have reached yet another milestone in the growth of our Surrey Sikh Cadets movement. We were very proud to see our kids marching in full uniform this evening, as were all of the parents and community members who have fuelled the development of this cadet corp.”
“To see the kids and parents glowing with pride confirmed all our hard work.”
Coming from a long military tradition, Sewak, who also played the key role in involving the Canadian Armed Forces participation in the annual Khalsa Day parades in Surrey, came up with idea of forming a cadet corps organized by the Sikh community about two years ago.
He shared his thoughts with Lieutenant-Commander Kris Phillips then the Senior Public Affairs Officer for the Department of National Defence in Vancouver who brought it to the attention of General Walter John Natynczyk, the former Chief of the Defence Staff of the Canadian Forces.
Over 500 people attended the event held at the Sikh Academy where a variety of awards of distinction were handed out to the cadets.
