Marissa Nahanee, 28, is an artist working in both the performing and visual arts.
She is from the Squamish and Nisga’a Nations.
As a performing artist, Marissa has been a member of the Chinook SongCatchers for the past twenty years as a singer, dancer, choreographer, storyteller, model and speaker. Her performance career has taken her overseas to Asia, Europe and South America.
After completing a program at The Art Institute of Vancouver for Event Management, Marissa was invited to work for the Four Host First Nations Secretariat. One of her files was the Vancouver 2010 Indigenous Youth Gathering (IYG). The IYG was a platform for the development of youth leadership and to recruit over 300 youth from across Canada to dance in the Opening Ceremonies for the 2010 Winter Games.
Marissa has also been invited by Health Canada to represent Aboriginal youth at a meeting of the United Nations – World Health Organization in Quito, Ecuador.
This summer, Marissa worked on a mural as an apprentice with Jerry Whitehead and Richard Tetrault. The mural is located at the Firehall Theatre in Vancouver.
She contributed Coast Salish art and history to the mural project.
