Filipino-Canadian playwright Kamila Sediego will present Homecoming, a staged reading, on Sunday, January 25.
The show is a Vancouver Asian Canadian Theatre (VACT) production. It airs on 7PM at the Carousel Theatre for Young People - Studio A (1411 Cartwright Street).
Homecoming follows the Cruz sisters, Tess and Vicky, who have been separated by years of miscommunication and misunderstanding. Vicky, the youngest sister, has remained in the Philippines and resents the family obligations forced upon her.
Tess, the eldest sister who immigrated to Canada, is back for a funeral and feels misunderstood by her status as the “spoiled one”.
Their heated confrontation reveals years of deeply rooted resentment, hurt, and ultimately, love.
Homecoming is a moving and startlingly mature debut by a promising, first-time playwright.
Joining Kamila Sediego is an exciting team of emerging and established professional artists. Melissa Oei, a Jessie Richardson Award nominated actor, will be directing Homecoming. She previously assistant directed the critically-acclaimed The Winter’s Tale for Classic Chic Productions.
Theatre veteran David Bloom, who is the Artistic Director of Felix Culpa and who has mentored hundreds of emerging theatre artists at Studio 58 and Capilano University, serves as dramaturge.
The cast consists of Jessie Richardson Award nominated actor Lissa Neptuno and emerging theatre actor Darlyne Dolap-Reece.
VACT works to dispel Asian stereotypes by producing leading and/or supporting roles where Asian-Canadians are depicted realistically in the performing arts. For more information on the play go to www.vact.ca.
