A typical fashion show lasts 7 minutes, however it takes weeks of preparation to produce a successful show. When Jessie Li told me about her modeling contest, I wanted to understand the differences in preparation for a fashion show and a modeling competition. We met the following week at a dance studio. The venue had hardwood floors, a mirrored wall and lots of natural light. I saw 15 leggy young ladies dressed in T-shirts, tights and 4” heels. As each girl took turns practicing her runway walk I noticed how pleasant they were to each other. Joanna (Jessie’s assistant) said a couple girls worked together on various runway shows but most of the girls met for the first time during the competition. The atmosphere was drastically better than the drama laden TV shows like Top Model or the Face. During a break I asked Jessie about the training. She said approximately 10 four hour sessions would help the girls with posing, walking on the runway and dancing (during the opening ceremony). There will be fittings for swimwear and evening gowns followed by dress rehearsals and final rehearsals. Each girl will demonstrate her runway walk for the media during a press conference. Lastly, 2 – 3 girls will accompany Jessie to a charity event which will allow them use everything they’ve learned. The afternoon few by and the training session came to an end. Each girl slipped into comfortable sweaters, boots and scarves. The transformation was amazing. Within minutes 14 girls were indistinguishable from any other woman on the “sidewalk”. Only one girl dressed like a model at the end of the session. She wore fitted jeans, knee high boots with stiletto heels and a fitted jacket. I imagine her interests are naturally part of her personality and go far beyond the contest. The New Cover 2015 contest final will be held Tuesday, February 17 at the River Rock Show Theatre.
