Paul Zindel's The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds is a reimagined interpretation of a classic drama that includes an ethnically diverse cast. It takes place in a non-traditional space in Chinatown. The drama will run November 18-28, 2015.
“The focus of this presentation was to set it in Vancouver's Chinatown, in a site-specific, immersive setting putting some awareness on the state of our Chinatown, while telling this story of a family facing against adversity,” says Chris Lam, Director and Designer of the production.
This version features four actresses who are of Asian descent.
Beatrice and her daughters, Tillie and Ruth, live in poor conditions. Beatrice tries to get rich quickly, but she is haunted by her past failures. Tillie is invited to compete in her school’s science fair. She presents The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon-Marigolds at her school. This opportunity offers a glimmer of hope in this family’s future.
This interpretation features five talented women (four of whom are of Asian decent).
