There’s a story behind everything we eat.
Meet writer/performer Jovanni Sy - he is a storytelller who cooks, or is it a cook who story-tells?
Sy is the protaganist of Boca del Lupo’s Micro Performance series 'A Taste of Empire'. Audiences in the Lower Mainland can watch him talk about his ingredients while cooking at traditional Filipino dish in real time. Artistic Director of Richmond’s Gateway Theatre takes us on an entertaining and thought-provoking trip through history as Sy weaves stories of conquest, imperialistic desires, and colonialism through the construction (and deconstruction) of the Rellenong Bangus. Audiences will smell the food and get to taste the completed dish at the end of the presentation.
The show will be performed Nov. 17 and 18 at the Liu Institute for Global Issues @UBC – 6476 NW Marine Drive; November 19 and 20 at the UBC Farm – 3461 Ross Drive; and Nov. 26 – 28 at The Fishbowl on Granville Island. Tickets cost $25 for adults and $20 for students or seniors.
