Sidewalk Runway

I attended my first Hijabi fashion show in March. Seeing models covered from head to toe presented fashion in a new light. When Ms. Reham Afify said she was hosting Moslema In Style 2015 I gladly offered to cover the event. She was excited to share the latest Middle Eastern designs with her guests. However, by Saturday, 10.24 her shipment hadn’t arrived and she was forced to use her existing inventory. The show took place at the Bonsor Community Center in Burnaby. It featured 30 colorful and contemporary pieces from Riham Farouk’s Veil collection and 6 traditional pieces from Amir Ezz el Deen’s Abaya Noir collection. Unlike typical shows that feature 20+ models and last 15-minutes, six models changed outfits six times. The show was more like an evening of fashion. After each change, outfits were placed on a clothing rack for the women’s only audience to touch and feel. Between changes, Emcee Ida Traxler kept the audience engaged by using volunteers to give holistic bodywork demonstrations. After the third change, guests were treated to a Middle Eastern buffet style dinner. Reham will be offering her guests a free show said once her shipment arrives.
